Decks, roof decks, and porches

A deck rail lives outside all year. We fabricate steel and cable systems for residential decks, roof decks, and porches, with posts anchored to the framing or the structure we verify on site. Catalog panels are a poor fit when the deck is racked, the posts are not on module, or a stair cuts through the run.

Porch-specific work is also on porch railings and exterior iron railings. Use this page when the project is a deck or roof deck.

Infill and finish

Cable and pickets are the usual deck requests. Ornamental iron is common on older houses. The finish has to match the exposure: coated steel, not interior paint.

Stairs off the deck should be railinged with the same system. See outdoor stair railings so the stair and the deck do not look like two different contractors.

How quoting works

Photos from the yard, approximate linear feet, height, infill, and the town. If the deck is new, the framing plan tells us where posts can land. If it is existing, we look at the rim and the posts before we promise a mount.

FAQ

Can you replace wood deck rails with metal?

Yes. We check the framing first. Metal posts need a solid place to land, and we will not fasten a guard to a soft or rotten rim.

Do you do roof decks in Boston?

Yes, when we can see the structure and the access. Roof decks need the same guard rules as other exterior edges, plus a finish that can take weather.

Cable or pickets?

Both. Cable wants stiffer posts. Pickets are often simpler on a traditional house. We will recommend one after we see the deck.
